Considered Ireland's finest actor, the elfin alumnus of the Abbey Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company is best known internationally for the character roles he played in films, appearing in everything from Carol Reed's surreal Odd Man Out in 1947 to Little Dorrit in 1988. He leaves behind an acting dynasty--three daughters, with whom he appeared in a 1990 production of Chekhov's The Three Sisters.
